Rescue Success Stories!
Dedicated to Permanently Rehoming Needy Boxers
We become quite fond of all our rescue dogs who have often had not the best start in life. It's exciting when they find forever homes. Thanks to all the great foster families and adoptive "parents" who make it happen!
Ember and Elmer
Prior to coming into rescue, Ember and Elmer had lived together as outside dogs (in Minnesota!) and didn't get as much attention as they would have liked. Needless to say, when they arrived at NBC Rescue, there was some work to do! After a nice vigorous bath, they got right to work on house manners. They came to rescue intact, so a trip to the vet for a spay and neuter was in order. It was during this visit that Elmer tested positive for heartworm. Fortunately, the disease was early enough along that he was not exhibiting symptoms. A few weeks later, Elmer was treated for heartworm and recovered very nicely (though it was hard to keep him inactive during the recovery period!)
In early January Ember and Elmer were adopted by Susan and Grant of New York Mills. Long time boxer owners, the couple had recently lost their boxer and were looking to fill a void in their family. This very special family decided to take both dogs. This adoption was especially exciting for us because though we had hoped to place them together, we knew it was a lot to ask, and figured the dogs might need to be separated to facilitate placement.
When they arrived in New York Mills, they wasted no time exploring their new forever home, and staking out spots on the couch. "Our family is now complete, once again" wrote Susan a few days after Ember and Elmer arrived home, "We are all enjoying having them as part of our family."
Solomon (aka "Kirk Douglas)
Solomon had a difficult time adjusting when he first came into rescue. A country dog for five years, coming to Minneapolis was quite a change. He became nervous when walking around the bustling city neighborhoods and was also a bit impatient with his foster family's resident Boxer, Monty. But WOW, what a difference a month makes! Four weeks after coming into foster care, he and Monty had become best friends. Solomon even taught the younger dog some house manners (like chilling on the couch instead of chewing it up). For that, his foster mom and dad are forever indebted to him.
It didn't take long for Solomon to catch the eye of a next door neighbor, Kim, who had lost her Boxer "Petey" at age 12 a few years earlier. Kim fell in love with Solomon's sweet spirit and handsome chin dimple (she insists he looks like Kirk Douglas). She decided it was time to liven up her home with another Boxer, so she adopted him. Solomon has grown accustomed to city life and now loves his walks around the neighborhood and going to the farmers market. When Kim upgraded her fence recently, she put a gate between her yard and his former foster famiy's so Solomon and Monty continue to play together often. It's LOTS of fun! The greatest part is seeing Solomon (now age 7), who had once been reserved and sleepy, bounce around like a puppy again. The Boxer spirit is remarkable!
Brandi (i.e. BGB for "Baby Girl Boxer")
Brandi is a sweet little fawn girl who was passed around a lot early in life. We weren't really sure why, as this girl was basically an overgrown lap dog, and her favorite spot was squarely in someone's lap. Her "bossiness" with other dogs was a bit more than some people were willing to handle until she met Melissa in Duluth who had experience with headstrong dogs. Brandi reminded her of a pup she had while growing up and the two hit it off right away! Brandi now enjoys having a whole house to herself, going on walks and playing in the leaves. Thanks, Melissa for giving this special girl another chance!
